When a multinational electronics company in Scotland ceased semiconductor manufacturing in  2017, it marked an opportunity for a new wide band gap semiconductor company, Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Limited.

Clas-SiC built a 150mm wafer fab on a new site on the outskirts of Lochgelly, Fife, and was able to retain essential engineering skills and jobs in the local area. The company also managed to place Scotland on the world map as the first open foundry to develop and prototype silicon carbide (SiC) diode and Mosfet devices. 

Today it’s helping customers “leap from lab to fab” in low and medium production volumes and it recently began using yieldHUB as their chosen yield management provider.

“The speed at which yieldHUB’s wafer yield analysis software integrated with our test system’s results was remarkable,” Clas-SiC Managing Director Rae Hyndman said.

Clas-SiC Manufacturing Excellence Engineering and Quality Manager Graeme Morland said they were using Excel before yieldHUB.

“We had stored and manipulated data in Excel and it worked to a point but as soon as we started to get a higher volume of data it was beginning to become unmanageable. yieldHUB was the right solution and we found it at the right time,” Mr Morland said.

“yieldHUB installed the application on Monday and by Tuesday we were online. It’s as fast and as straightforward as that.

“We needed a yield management platform because we manufacture wafers, 150mm SiC wafers through JBS/MPS diode and MOSFET process flows, and we need to be sure they function properly, to meet customer's requirements.”

He said as soon as they have the data, they need to get it in the correct format for analysis to ensure the product had been built “correctly” and “performs the way it was intended”.

“We need quick and graphical representation of the results in a format that is understandable as engineers so we’re able to convey that to customers. That’s what yieldHUB does. 

“It used to take us a couple of hours to do something, now it takes us a couple of minutes. Two hours of an engineer’s time spent cutting and pasting things into excel is not the best use of time so yieldHUB has fast-tracked that process.

“It’s easy to learn, easy to drive and it’s intuitive. It saves us time in data storage, and manipulation and I’d say we can do this in under half the time because of yieldHUB.”

Further, he said the customer service was “very good”.

“I just can’t fault it.” He continued, “On several occasions, yieldHUB has helped us get the information to the customer faster and has shortened that time scope. It usually takes about four to eight weeks to make a customer’s product.”
